Museum Of London Docklands

The Museum of London Docklands is part of the Museum of London Group, which includes the Museum of London. The Museum of London Docklands has been closed throughout the summer to host Deutsches Haus, the official base for the German National Olympic Committee. I'm a big fan of the Museum of London Docklands, especially Mudlarks which is one of the best museum children's play areas in London. This 200 year old warehouse reveals the long history of London as a port through stories of trade, migration and commerce.

Many original features remain including much of the timber flooring which is even older than the building. The Museum of London Docklands explores the story of London's river, port and people, from Roman settlement of the port, through to the recent regeneration of London's former Docklands.

Visiting Buckingham Palace Summer Opening - Buckingham Palace's sumptuous State Rooms open again this summer, and after the palace's lavish interiors were so prominently displayed in Danny Boyle's Olympics Opening Ceremony, they're bound to be even more popular this year than usual. You're unlikely to see any royals on your visit, but you will have time to admire artworks that form part of the Royal Collection, including paintings by Van Dyck and Canaletto. This year visitors will also have the opportunity to experience the Diamonds: A Jubilee Celebration exhibition.

Visiting London Canal Museum

When visiting the London Canal Museum it will helps you get to know London's waterways and also particularly the Regent's Canal which it backs on to. The London Canal Museum building had a previous life as an ice warehouse for ice imports from Norway before mechanical ice production. In this Museum you will also find interesting displays about ice and ice-cream as well as the chance to see the only surviving ice well in London.

At the London Canal Museum you can see inside a narrowboat cabin, you can learn about the history of London’s canals, about the cargoes carried, the people who lived and worked on the waterways and the horses that pulled their boats. This is an unique waterways museum is housed in a former ice warehouse built in about 1862-3 for Carlo Gatti, the famous ice cream maker and features the history of the ice trade and ice cream as well as the canals.

There are two themes in this unusual London museum. London's canals have a fascinating past and you will learn not only how they came to be built but about the lives of the workers, the cargoes, horses and how canals work. The London Canal Museum is first waterways museum and foremost, but also an industrial museum telling the story of the ice industry in London. It is the only London museum of inland waterways and is situated at King's Cross, an accessible central location.
